During our long drive on Thursday, Eric had developed a nasty-sounding cough. By Thursday night he was clearly not feeling well. I knew there was trouble when he declined to join us for breakfast on Friday morning. Eventually, he did emerge from the hotel and made the trip to Jerry's house, where we were having lunches purchased from a local taco truck. Still not hungry, he developed chills and a high fever along with his cough. We feared pnuemonia, so Kim volunteered to take him to the local hospital. The rest of us went to the drug store for zinc lozenges. Fortunately, Eric's lungs were clear, and Tylenol brought down his temperature. In the meantime, the rest of us went sightseeing. We did a little shopping and visited the Niebaum-Coppola Winery, where Gary picked out a nice bottle of something-or-other for his wife. Jessica and I found some T-shirts we liked in St. Helena, but it became clear the shopkeeper really wasn't interested in our money, so we left. (Later we found a much better deal for the same shirts online.)

The grape vines were pruned in the winter, and many are still bare, while others are just starting to develop green buds and leaves.
