On our way into downtown Friday, morning, we passed the flagship Wendy's
restaurant. We did not eat there.
Friday evening Eric, Dan, Rosemary and Gary go to a little dive across
the street from the Ohio State campus, called "Java's Grill", serving
cheap Indonesian food in a plain setting.
Gary sits at a table, after we had ordered our food at the counter in the
background. Most of the clientele appeared to be Indonesian.
This is the $3.75 Friday special combo platter, that all of us except Rosemary
ordered. The front row contains a starchy cake, a little piece of beef, and
a piece of chicken in a tangy, bar-be-cue-y sauce. The back row is yellow
rice with egg shavings on top, and something that looked like shoestring
potatoes, but were very sweet, with a very spicy coating sauce.
We all thought the food was just fine, although Andrei and Nida were less
enthusiatic when they went there the following evening.
One of the goals of the trip was to make it to Krispy Kreme Doughnuts,
which has recently emerged as a cult classic. From 6 to 11, both morning
and night, the red neon "Hot Doughnuts Now" sign is lit, which means
that glazed yeast doughnuts can be gotten straight from the automated
assembly line. Friday noon, while in the mall looking for Eric's red
shirt, Rosemary's cellphone rang from inside her purse. It was her
husband calling from Van Nuys at 9AM, in a sugar high from eating his
first Krispy Kremes. This strengthened our resolve, and we made the
long drive to the west end of town, after our Indonesian dinner on Friday
night.
Here is part of the assembly line, with doughnuts emerging from frying in oil.
After they come out of the oil, the doughnuts pass through a waterfall of
sugar glaze.
Dan gazes at the counter full of doughnuts, while the counter person awaits
out choices.
Rosemary tries to call her husband, to report on the doughnuts in Ohio.
We were all given Krispy Kreme hats to wear back to the hotel. Dan wears
his as he and Rosemary enter the hotel.
Dave, Richard, Kathy and Russ sample some of the two dozen doughnuts brought
back to the hotel.
